We await the shuttle to take us to the rental car facility.  Guen is in the near crate on the left.
Yes, dogs are allowed on the Capitol steps!
The Natural Bridge was purchased by Thomas Jefferson from the British.
The American Indian Museum
Amelia Earhart's Vega
Our trip begins as we take the redeye from Los Angeles International Airport to Dulles, just outside of Washington D.C.  I was nervous because Guenevere had never flown before other than when she came to me as a little pupper from Michigan.  Luckily, I was flying with my usual traveling partners and seasoned flyers, Kate and Tracy and their five Border Collies.  We arrived safely in our nation's capitol and the cooler weather immediately brightened Guenevere's spirits.
Guen wanted me to rent a limo but I stuck with the Ford Escape.
While Kate and Tracy took off for Lexington, Virginia; Guenevere and I took a quick tour of the U. S. Capitol and the east end of the National Mall.

Guenevere arrives safely in Dulles.
The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum is the home of many historical aircraft, including The Wright Brothers early planes at Kitty Hawk, The Spirit of Stl Louis, Apollo 11 Command Module Columbia  and my favorite, Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega.

The museum I wanted to see the most was the National Museum of the American Indian.  It more than lived up to my expectations.
We left Washington, D.C. at 3:30 p.m. promptly got into some major traffic jams and finally arrived at our Hotel in Natural Bridge, Virginia well after dark.  Oh, we didn't stay in the main hotel but in a little cabin across the street.  On one side of the parking lot, was the Baptist Church and Cemetary and on the other side was the Monster and Dinosaur museum!  Unfortunately, the latter was closed but there was a large field for walking Guen.
I can't believe men orbited the earth in this teacup.
The 1903 Wright Flyer
The Spirit of St. Louis.  Looks awful small to fly across the Atlantic!
So that's why I have long arms...
At the Natural History Museum I saw our ancestors and the Hope Diamond!
Smiling goes way back!
The National Gallery of Art has a large collection and their central fountains and flower displays were beautiful.
On thursday morning we headed over to the Virginia Horse Center to check in for the competition.
Tracy, Kate and I shared a stall with six dogs.
After a quick trip to Walmart for supplies, Kate and Tracy set up the horse stall and entered the "Time to Beat" competition.  I decided to go sightseeing.
The main arena was a beautiful facility.
There were many local attractions adjacent to our hotel.  I toured the toy museum, wax museum and the Natural Bridge area, including an Indian village and waterfall.  Guenevere enjoyed the hike but wanted to know why she could not go swimming.
More to Come!
The competition!
The Wild Animal Safari!
The return to Washington D.C. and home!
After our hike I returned to the show site and went to dinner with Kate and Tracy at Ruby Tuesdays.  The new item on the menu was Lobster Macaroni and Cheese! The next morning, we were all up early and arrived at the Virginia Horse Center for the State Competition.  Unfortunately, I was to find that unless you got there at 5:30 a.m. you had to park on a hill and lug your stuff to the horse barns.  Luckily, I only had one dog and not that much stuff.  This year was the first year that they decided to split the 20 inch class in half.  One half did jumpers first the other half did standard first.  I managed to get confused and missed my walk thru for standard.  Luckily it was not too dificult to remember, but I think that led to me trying an unwise plan near the end of the run which caused Guen to spin in front of the second to last jump and earn two refusals.  Rats.  We were still slightly out of sync in JWW but Guen ran clean.  My teacher, Kate, went clean with all three of her dogs in both rounds and placed with two of them, helping California win the State Competition for the second year in a row.
